November 16, 2017 BOE Meeting

Board of Education Meeting on November 16th
At our November 16th Board of Education meeting, Superintendent, Rebecca Gensel was excited to welcome some Stony Brook students who were there to share the details of the fundraiser they did for hurricane relief.

Ms. Gensel spoke about the fundraiser. “It was intended to start off as just a little something our students could do to help a school like ours in Houston that had been impacted by the hurricane. When you get done hearing their story you are going to be so amazed and proud of the students of Branchburg and what they were able to accomplish.”

What our students had to say:

Adopting a School

As a school, we decided to adopt Northline Elementary School in North Houston. The school and surrounding homes were badly impacted by the horrible flooding during Hurricane Harvey. In order to get the word out to the students and Branchburg Community, we made a “Commercial” advertising about the Huskies Hustle for Houston Walk-a-Thon and raising donations to help their school.

We wrote letters to Northline Elementary School, too. We also learned facts about Hurricane Harvey and how it put a lot of stress on the citizens of the neighborhood each day during morning announcements. Mr. Altmire also challenged us to a “Coin Carry”. We were put to the test to find as many coins laying around our house as we could, so he could carry them inside his backpack during our walk-a-thon. In the end the backpack totaled a weight of fifty-one pounds! All of the coins are being donated to Northline Elementary.

Walk-a-Thon

On October 6, 2017 we had the walkathon. As we walked out of the building we could hear cheering and music! We saw our secretary’s horses, Baxter and Storm. Live horses! There were also a lot of fun stations, like a photo booth, limbo, stepping hoops, cone flipping station.

Everyone in our school participated and everyone was happy to achieve our goal of laps that was 1,593. This number represents the distance from Stony Brook School to Northline Elementary School. It was all worth it because a school helping another school is so powerful! Because Huskies hustle for Houston!

Skype Assembly

On October 20th, the Stony Brook student body and staff Skyped with Northline Elementary School. We finally got to meet the students that we had worked so hard to help! Students in Ms. Rimmler’s class explained the process and exciting events of the Walk-a-Thon journey from start to finish, so that the Northline students understood all that we did for them.

Then we got to do the grand reveal of the fundraising amount of $13,000 dollars on a huge check. We raised $12,700 and the Branchburg Rotary Club generously donated $300! The students and staff at Northline were so excited. We ended our assembly by enjoying a special slideshow to celebrate our hard work of the Walk-a-Thon. We are going to share a little bit of it with you now.
